According to ancient law, the eldest male of the ruling family, Koppány, should be the heir, but before his death Géza had made the Hungarian nobles swear an oath that in accordance with Christian law, his own son, István, should become the ruling prince. The enmity between István and Koppány threatens to boil over into a fratricidal war.
II. Esztergom: Under the leadership of Asztrik, István's followers chose him to become the ruling prince.
III. Koppány, the Chieftain: In 997 an army, led by Vecellin, a German knight, defeat Koppány.
IV. Stephen, the King: Koppány is drawn and quartered, the new order is consolidated and István is crowned king on 25 December 1000 at the threshold of the new millennium.
